DEBORAH REDDEN
Artist Profile 2007
Deborah
Redden, a lifetime resident of the Jersey Shore and an avid sailor, paints
on location the boats, lighthouses and scenes that have shaped her life
and constantly challenge her artistic style. Over time she has changed
from a traditional approach in painting to a freer more abstract style.
She works to capture the emotion of the scene in a spontaneous burst
of color and brush work that results in a unique expression of artistic
energy.
Redden
has a Master’s Degree in Art from Pratt Institute, N.Y. and a Bachelor’s
Degree in Art Education from Monmouth University, N.J. She was on the
faculty at Monmouth University as Professor of Methods of Teaching Elementary & Secondary
Art for 18 years and exhibited each year in the Faculty Exhibition. In 1999,
she was recognized for her contribution to the arts by Senate Majority Leader
John O. Bennett. For 25 years she taught art in area elementary and
secondary schools. Most recently she was a full-time Fine Arts teacher at Rumson-Fair
Haven Regional High School and retired from there in June 2004.
Currently
Redden is the President of the Board of Trustees of the Guild of Creative Art,
Shrewsbury, and an Exhibiting Member. She paints with the Plein Air Painters
of the Jersey Coast and has had several solo and group shows locally. She
is also an Associate member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Garden
State Watercolor Society. As a juried entrant, she exhibits annually at the
Monmouth Festival of Art, Tinton Falls and other regional shows. Her
work is in many private collections around the United States.
“Painting
is my passion and my intent is to infuse that energy and emotion into my work. Events
of my life have led me into teaching and I’ve found that each student
as well as each painting offers a new challenge, a new blank page and an opportunity
to not only help students develop artistically but to re-examine my own work. As
an artist I’m constantly changing and growing. It’s exciting
and addictive. The journey never ends.”
